Q: When was Hedvig founded?

A: Hedvig was founded as a startup in June of 2012 by Avinash Lakshman, the co-inventor of Amazon Dynamo and inventor of Cassandra. Hedvig draws on Lakshman's 10 years of expertise in developing and running the largest distributed systems. The company was officially launched in March 2015.

Q: What prompted Avinash to create Hedvig?

A: Lakshman created Hedvig with a mission to build the best distributed storage platform for any bare metal, hypervisor, container, or cloud. We believe there hasn't been any fundamental innovation in the storage industry in many years. Progress has been incremental at best. The power and thinking of distributed systems represents the first true innovation in more than a decade. That fueled us to create the industry's first distributed storage platform for any compute environment to help lower the cost of storing data while providing a platform built with the self-service and provisioning of the cloud.

Q: Who are your investors and what is your funding?

A: Hedvig has raised $30.5M to-date. This includes a $2.5 million seed round led by True Ventures, with participation by Atlantic Bridge and Redpoint Ventures, a Series A for $10 million, led by Atlantic Bridge, with True Ventures and Redpoint Ventures contributing again, and finally a Series B for $18M, led by Vertex Ventures with further participation by True Ventures and Atlantic Bridge.

Q: Why does the world need another storage product? What has Hedvig done differently?

A: Unlike other distributed storage approaches, Hedvig provides unprecedented flexibility. Hedvig doesn’t assume companies will know everything at once, then saddle them with a deployment that will cost them more time, energy, and budget when it obsolesces. Instead, Hedvig provides the flexibility to adapt to changing data, app, and user requirements. Hedvig turns software into an appreciating asset sitting atop commodity hardware. Companies can add more capabilities as their needs evolve, without having to reset their storage architecture. Hedvig is designed for change and built to scale. Hedvig is modern storage for modern business.

Q: What is your business value proposition?

A: We believe decreasing the capital and operational costs of storing data is table stakes. At Hedvig, we believe a storage solution can do more. Much more. That's why Hedvig helps companies with time-to-market. Data is critical to existing and emerging applications, yet storage suffers from "human latency" – often taking days or weeks to provision in test, development, and production environments. Our distributed systems approach ensures that applications can be developed, provisioned, and scaled faster. This directly impacts the top and bottom line, and improves customer satisfaction, acquisition, and retention.

Q: What use cases are most appropriate for Hedvig's technology?

A: Hedvig is ideal for a wide range of uses, ranging from private clouds including OpenStack, to big data deployments running Hadoop or NoSQL, to more traditional server virtualization, disaster recovery, backup and archiving environments.

Q: Why would a customer take a risk on your technology?

A: Hedvig's distributed systems DNA – the experience of 10 years of designing and operating the largest distributed systems powering the most successful companies – provides meaningful credibility and confidence to customers. Organizations that adopt the Hedvig solution are willing to explore a new platform for storage because they need a way to keep pace with the changes they are experiencing in their application architectures. Companies are pushing the envelope with new applications that generate and analyze more data than ever before. Existing storage platforms are not architected to keep pace with the requisite scale and flexibility requirements. Hedvig is the only technology provider that can combat the economics of exponential data growth while also providing the simplicity and usability of cloud infrastructure. Hedvig offsets the risk of a "new technology" by providing a system with tunable replication that includes multi-site disaster recovery (DR) capabilities built-in. This means applications and data that are not easily protected by normal DR processes now have a built-in data protection mechanism.

Q: When is the Hedvig Distributed Storage Platform available?

A: The product is generally available (GA) now.

Q: What is your pricing model?

A: Hedvig has a fundamentally disruptive and powerfully simple pricing model. The product is available with a perpetual license based on a tiered capacity model. All platform features are included. A subscription pricing model is available upon request.

Q: What are Hedvig's hours of support?

A: Hedvig provides support on a 24x7 basis via support engineers in different time zones using a follow-the-sun model. A 9x5 support option is available for customers that do not require 24x7 support.

Q: How do I contact support?

A: For S1 urgent events (severity 1 = critical impact or system down) we recommend you call Hedvig immediately for assistance at +1 (888) 798-0914 or +1 (408) 758-6564. For S2-S4 cases, customers can send an email to support@hedviginc.com.

Q: Are you members of TSANet or similar industry support collaboration organization?

A: Yes Hedvig is a member of TSANet. This enables us to engage in cross-vendor cooperative support efforts. If you would like Hedvig to engage with a 3rd-party vendor, feel free to make this request.
