When was Hedvig founded?

Hedvig was founded as a startup in June of 2012 by Avinash Lakshman, the co-inventor of Amazon Dynamo and inventor of Cassandra. Hedvig draws on Lakshman’s 10 years of expertise in developing and running the largest distributed systems. The company was officially launched in March 2015.

What prompted Avinash to create Hedvig?

Lakshman created Hedvig with a mission to build the best distributed storage platform for any bare metal, hypervisor, container, or cloud. We believe there hasn’t been any fundamental innovation in the storage industry in many years. Progress has been incremental at best. The power and thinking of distributed systems represents the first true innovation in more than a decade. That fueled us to create the industry’s first distributed storage platform for any compute environment to help lower the cost of storing data while providing a platform built with the self-service and provisioning of the cloud.

Who are your investors and what is your funding?

Hedvig has raised $52M to-date. This includes:

  • A $2.5 million seed round led by True Ventures, with participation by Atlantic Bridge and Redpoint Ventures
  • A Series A for $10 million, led by Atlantic Bridge, with True Ventures and Redpoint Ventures contributing
  • A Series B for $18M, led by Vertex Ventures with further participation by True Ventures and Atlantic Bridge
  • A Series C for $21.5M with investments from Singapore-based EDBI, Hewlett Packard Pathfinder, part of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and the Oman Technology Fund with expanded investments from Atlantic Bridge Ventures, True Ventures and Vertex Ventures

Hedvig decreases the capital and operational costs of storing data. More importantly, Hedvig helps companies with time-to-market. Our distributed systems approach simplifies storage and ensures that applications can be developed, provisioned, and scaled faster in support of digital business. What use cases are most appropriate for Hedvig’s technology?

Hedvig is ideal for a wide range of uses, primarily focused on private clouds built on technologies like VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, OpenStack, and Docker, Kubernetes, and Mesos where automation and flexibility are key.

It is also an ideal solution for secondary storage in backup and archiving environments, providing ideal scaling and economics for storage large amounts of data.

How long has the Hedvig solution been available?

The product has been generally available (GA) since 2015. In August 2017 we launched the 3.x version.

What is your pricing model?

Hedvig is available with two licensing models:

An annual subscription pricing model based on required capacity that includes software use and support for a 12-month period.
A perpetual capacity-based license. (Support added separately).
Each are available in primary storage (all features), backup/archive storage, or object-only storage versions that are priced according to the set of features delivered for the given use cases.

What are Hedvig’s hours of support?

Hedvig provides support on a 24×7 basis via support engineers in different time zones using a follow-the-sun model. A 9×5 support option is available for customers that do not require 24×7 support.
